A iniciativa é da Climate and Clean Air Coalition – Mitigação de Poluentes Atmosféricos de Vida Curta do Setor de Resíduos Sólidos Municipais. O evento foi realizado em Santiago, no Chile.
O Brasil foi representado pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente, pela ABRELPE e por quatros municípios convidados: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília e Curitiba. O objetivo do encontro é criar uma rede de cidades para a troca de experiências visando reduzir substancialmente ou evitar o lançamento de metano e carbono provindos do tratamento dos resíduos sólidos urbanos.
Segundo Heliana Kátia, que também dirige os Serviços de Limpeza Urbana de Brasília – SLU, “as cidades participantes da rede se comprometem a compartilhar informações relevantes para informar as ações realizadas; desenvolver e implementar medidas apropriadas de mitigação, e usar a ferramenta de medição dessa iniciativa para o acompanhamento dos resultados pretendidos.,
Além disso, de acordo com a especialista, as cidades participam de apresentações em workshops, webinares e no desenvolvimento de estudos de casos para serem compartilhados com a plataforma de conhecimento da iniciativa.
