A Organização das Nações Unidas – ONU publicou em seu site uma matéria (leia aqui) reconhecendo os catadores de materiais recicláveis como os principais atores na reciclagem de resíduos sólidos para a indústria, uma vez que conhecem o mercado local de recicláveis, podendo informar aos gestores quais são os resíduos que tem viabilidade econômica no Município.
Para a Confederação Nacional de Municípios (CNM) os catadores muitas vezes não são reconhecidos por seu papel chave em todo o processo de reciclagem, na reagregação de valor à matéria prima contida nos resíduos e na contribuição para a redução das emissões de carbono, uma vez que reciclar emite menos gases de efeito estufa do que manufaturar produtos novamente e do que os aterros e lixões.
Segundo informações da ONU, o Brasil foi o primeiro país a integrar catadores, em suas cooperativas, a sistemas de gestão de resíduos sólidos municipais e o primeiro a adotar uma Política Nacional de Resíduos, reconhecendo as contribuições desses trabalhadores e proporcionando um enquadramento jurídico para permitir que cooperativas sejam contratadas como provedores de serviços.
A CNM corrobora com o reconhecimento do importante papel dos catadores de resíduos recicláveis para osucesso do tratamento dos resíduos sólidos.
