ABES-RJ se solidariza com as vítimas da tragédia de Petrópolis e alerta sobre a recorrência dos fatos

Como entidade de classe que preza pela qualidade de vida e segurança de toda sociedade, temos a obrigação de destacar que o desastre que atingiu o município de Petrópolis não pode ser visto como inesperado.

A Associação Brasileira de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental Seção Rio de Janeiro (ABES-RJ) vem por meio desta nota demonstrar imensa solidariedade a todos e todas as vítimas do trágico desastre ocorrido em Petrópolis na noite desta terça-feira, dia 15 de fevereiro.

Como entidade de classe que preza pela qualidade de vida e segurança de toda sociedade, temos a obrigação de destacar que o desastre que atingiu o município de Petrópolis não pode ser visto como inesperado. A região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro já foi atingida anteriormente pelas fortes chuvas, deixando centenas de mortos e desaparecidos. Em janeiro de 2011 os deslizamentos deixaram 21 mil pessoas desabrigadas, com aproximadamente mil mortes, e até hoje, mais de 10 anos depois, algumas vítimas não foram encontradas.

Infelizmente, a tragédia se repete, até o momento estima-se 98 mortos, mas ainda não se sabe o número de pessoas desaparecidas. Ao menos 80 casas foram atingidas, de acordo com a Defesa Civil.

Situações como esta poderiam ser evitadas com ações preventivas por parte do poder público e dos órgãos responsáveis, visto que não é a primeira vez que a região sofre com as fortes chuvas. A ocupação irregular do terreno, com construções urbanas de forma desordenada e sem planejamento, gera um grande impacto no sistema de drenagem.

A ocupação de encostas sem a devida preocupação com a segurança do solo e a impermeabilização do terreno gera um maior escoamento superficial da chuva. Outro ponto de atenção é a coleta de lixo. Quando não feita com regularidade, também gera impactos no sistema de drenagem da região.

Por fim, são inúmeros os pontos de atenção que foram e continuam sendo alertados ao longo dos anos que poderiam ter evitado tamanho sofrimento para as famílias atingidas. No estado do Rio de Janeiro existem inúmeros profissionais capacitados na área que podem contribuir com a construção de políticas públicas e medidas preventivas para que desastres como este não se repitam no futuro.
