Apresentado no programa ABES Conecta, que disponibiliza conteúdos qualificados online, com os temas mais relevantes do setor de saneamento e meio ambiente, o Ranking deste ano demonstra que 13.712 leitos poderiam estar disponíveis por mês, (levantamento relativo aos meses de janeiro, fevereiro e março), se não houvesse internações por doenças causadas pela falta de saneamento (confira aqui o estudo).
Este é um dos dados do Suplemento do Ranking. Além do panorama nos municípios (veja abaixo), o Ranking ABES demonstra a correlação entre a pontuação total alcançada por eles e a taxa de internação por doenças relacionadas ao saneamento ambiental inadequado, em função da intrínseca relação entre saneamento e saúde.

Por fim, apresenta um panorama da situação de cada município do ranking em relação à formulação do Plano de Saneamento Básico, instrumento fundamental para as políticas públicas de saneamento no país e condição para obtenção de recursos da União para esses serviços a partir de 2023.
O ranking edição 2020 reúne 1857 municípios, representando cerca de 70% da população do país com informações dos municípios brasileiros que forneceram ao SNIS – Sistema Nacional de Informações de Saneamento – as informações para o cálculo de cada um dos cinco indicadores utilizados no estudo. As 27 capitais brasileiras estão presentes no ranking.
